Windscape Brooklyn is pleased to present a sound and video by John Roach in the immersive theater, the Storybox.

Breezes, gusts and gales offer a visceral experience of climate as they batter, tickle and whistle their way through our human imagination. Wind is a central feature of our myths and our histories. It has shaped our lives for millennia and our earth for eons. Roach’s work, “When We Bow Down Our Heads,” celebrates the resonance of wind and its promiscuous and borderless nature with a quadraphonic soundscape that envelops the listener. It combines 10 years of spatialized field recordings, performances by Wolf Robert Stratmann (double bass) and Inbal Hever (voice), and is punctuated by interviews with climate scientist Joonsuk Kang, artist Raven Chacon, and illustrator Lauren Redniss.

Accompanying the sound is a work created for WindScape Brooklyn’s massive Storybox video wall which portrays a shifting landscape of windswept grasses, trees and turbines along with a scrolling graphic score that Roach created to guide the musicians who improvised with his soundscape.

Where is Windscape and how to get there

WindScape Brooklyn is located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
The center is in Building 4, Section A, Floor 6
located at 34 35th Street in Industry City.

Public Transit (recommended):
Subway: Take the D, N, or R trains to 36th Street Station (Brooklyn). Exit at 36th Street and walk north along 4th Avenue to 35th Street. Turn left and walk west along 35th Street (toward the waterfront). Cross 3rd Avenue to Industry City.
Bus: The B35 (39th Street) and B70 (3rd Avenue) stop nearby and are short walks directly into Industry City

Locating 34 35th Street, Building 4, Section A, Floor 6:
After crossing 3rd Avenue, continue west along 35th Street until you’re almost at 2nd Avenue.
Look for a colorful sign WindScape Brooklyn (pictured here) as you continue down the walkway.
Enter through the large black double-doors between the WindScape Brooklyn sign on the left and Artist & Craftsman Supply store on the right.

Inside the Building:
Once inside, look for a black and white directory marked “BLDG 4 A Section.”
“WindScape Brooklyn: A Community Offshore Wind Learning Center” will be noted on the sign.
Take the elevator directly behind the sign.
Press the button for the 6th floor (no code or scanning required).
When you exit the elevator, WindScape Brooklyn will be directly in front of you.

Parking:
A paid parking lot is available on 2nd Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets, directly across from Industry City. Rates are approximately $20/day. Because parking is limited and fills quickly, we encourage guests to use public transit, carpool, or rideshare (Uber/Lyft) whenever possible.

When We Bow Down Our Heads is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and the sponsorship of The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation.
